![]() The next Samsung rep reflashed our software, and the problem was back after 2 days. The same malfunction was back again the next day. I don't have the phone with me at the moment, so I can't confirm that. On the first visit, she changed our APN settings, I believe to the exact settings you have spelled out. We have also gone three times to see the Samsung rep at our local Best Buy. I assume this replacement would be a refurbished phone which for all I know would have the same problem. The problem came back after each of these "fixes." At the last AT&T store, the rep suggested that since the phones are still under warranty, we should return them and have them replaced. At the next one, the rep gave us new sim cards. At one of these these stores the the rep removed the battery and then plugged it back in. We have been to 3 different AT&T stores, and the people we dealt with had no clue and acted like they had never heard of this problem. We got our S4s in March, and they worked just fine until about a month ago. Thank you for posting all of this! My wife and I have been going crazy with this exact problem. If anyone else has feedback, do tell, I'm kind of out of ideas besides rooting. Still have two cases open about the issue, but another two weeks, I'm dropping the network. "internet" and bearer : LTE have measurable advantagesĪgain, neither solves the actual problem of random drop. "hipri, fota, admin" have measureable disadvantages (ping, download/upload) Multimedia message proxy : īearer: LTE (only if you're around towers with LTE, otherwise leave unspecified) Settings->Connections->More networks ->Mobile networks->Access Point NamesĪPN : phone (other choices are broadband, etc. Odd that such trite settings can affect so much: Doesn't solve the issue, but easily gets a 2X LTE speed uplift. Took some time to experiment APNs, for those that care. I'll try to find a universal APN hack to 4G and post. Maybe this post will get a real "engineer" to do something besides run pre-coded diagnostics on the S4s. Too bad, probably losing customers b/c of it. Ultimately, replacing/rooting/updating/SIM swap/battery replacing/ON/OFF will NOT fix this issue, it is systemic. (If I get asked one more time if I reset my phone or if there was sufficient battery, I'm going to scream. Solutions seem to narrow to rooting the phone, hacking a non-rooted phone to find a correct local APN for 4G, or simply dumping AT&T, paying the ETF, and going to a network which takes this seriously. Previous versions of AT&T S4s allowed you to turn off LTE, but that was taken away in Kitkat without root. ![]() ![]() But how do you do that? The mighty internet says to root your phone, but what if you don't want to do that (especially with the plethora of shady ROMs out there)? The Internetz will also say to add your own "APN", but that gets hacky and is specific to your local 4G carrier (which may or may not be a derivative of the babyBell buyouts). If you are able to turn off LTE, everything will work fine. 4.4.3 has been out for some devices, but Samsung hasn't pushed it to AT&T yet. Moving on, the issue invovles 4.4.2 and some recent LTE update. If they had gone to said tower in person with a phone, they would see the LTE brokeness, but alas, that's not how the support works. Seems like a script kiddie ran some python tests remotely and all the tests said "PASS" so therefore it was "resolved". We actually found the behavior differs by tower, and when trying to file a massive bug (like corporate level) on a tower in Austin, TX, the "engineers" from AT&T took a look and said "issue has been resolved". My fellow nerds and I have instead filed a bucket of technical bugs and tried to isolate the issue. I'm extremely technical (semiconductor design), and colleagues with S4s have seen this occur for the last month or so.Ĥ.) Download "Mark the Spot" to diagnose and report errorsĦ.) If all else fails, back up photos, etc., replace phone at warranty area This turns out to be dangerous, especially if I need to get in contact with my wife for something urgent. Basically the phone acts like it's not on the network at all. Texts don't come through, phone calls go right to voicemail, voicemail messages don't alert the user. Last 3 weeks or so, Samsung Galaxy S4 for me and wife have sporadically not been connected, even in presence of 1-2 bars of 4G LTE.
